Road to Olympics near end for Jamaica basketball
published: Friday | September 28, 2007

THE WOES continued for Jamaica's women's basketball team when they went down 115-47 to the mighty United States in their second game of the FIBA Americas Championship in Chile yesterday.

Five players, led by the WNBA Houston Comets, Tina Thompson's 18 points, were in double digits for the U.S. who were never tested in the fixture.

The Jamaicans were led in scoring by centre Simone Edwards, who had 18 points, while point guard Nicole Louden had 14.

Second loss

The loss was the second in as many games for the team which went down 68-47 to Canada in their opening fixture.

Having lost two games, Jamaica are basically out of the running for a berth at next year's Olympics.

They will play their final group game against Cuba at 3:30 p.m. today.

At an end

With only the top team sure to qualify for the 2008 Games in Beijing and only the teams finishing two through four having a chance to qualify from the World Olympic qualifying tournament, which will be held next year, the road to the Olympic seems to be at an end for Jamaica.
