Hotel Four Seasons - old-school dining at its best

As we continue to salivate in anticipation of this year's Gleaner-sponsored Kingston Restaurant Week (KRW), organised by Stephanie Scott of SSCO Event Planners. Here are five more participating restaurants. The package includes discounted and fixed prices for a choice of appetiser, main course and dessert. Remember that beverages, gratuity and GCT are additional.

(Savoury Category $1,300)

German sisters Helga Stoeckert and Christa Lund arrived in Jamaica in 1958 with their mother. They came on visitors' visas but realised that, "Jamaica didn't need tourists, but food!" They hired a German sausage maker to prepare smoked meats and established the Tip Top restaurant on Half-Way Tree Road. "It used to be the meeting place for all the big shots. Everyone met at Tip Top," says Helga triumphantly.

In 1964, they left behind the old location, along with its name, and moved to Ruthven Road to develop Hotel Four Seasons and restaurant, newcomers to Kingston Restaurant Week.

To date, the restaurant maintains its old-school dining room, seating up to 120 patrons. The menu, available at dinner time and weekend lunches, offers Jamaican cuisine, steaks, European dishes, 'slim gourmet' options, 14 different cakes, and assorted pies. During the week, you'll eat a hearty lunch from the buffet for $886 per head. And if you simply fancy cocktails and light snacks, there is an intimate pub-like bar across the hallway. Both are non-smoking, but there are smoking tables on the patio at the hotel's entrance.

The hotel prides itself on providing a venue for weddings and other functions. There are also three conference rooms which can be hired for these purposes, as well as for smaller business meetings or parties. The Jamaican German Society uses their hospitality for their weekly Friday Evening Fish Fry. Helga insists that anyone can come. She'll charge you by the fish and let you bring your own liquor!
