Grog Shoppe - food and live entertainment
published: Thursday | October 18, 2007

Try Grog Shoppe's vegetable samosas, satay chicken on a bed of mashed potatoes and cherry cheesecake for Kingston Restaurant Week. - Ian Allen/Staff Photographer

(Savoury Category - $1,300

Opened to replicate the atmosphere of the old buccaneer capital Port Royal, the Port Royal Grog Shoppe is now just called Grog Shoppe. As the Devon House property itself belongs to the Jamaican people, not even the most recent owners, Mr. Brady and Mr. Chen, are allowed to change the name.

The huge arched wooden doors open out from the 50-seat dining room on to the tree-shaded patio, accommodating 150 persons. The walls - part of which date back to the late 17th century - and the floors are all made of brick. A side door in the restaurant leads to the cozy 20-seat English-style pub, which houses two televisions for patrons to enjoy their favourite channels!

Aside from serving Jamaican fare at reasonable prices, KRW participant, Grog Shoppe, has an extensive beverage selection. From wines to cocktails, there's little you can't savour, and the long-standing 'Devon Duppy' is not to be overlooked!

Able to cater for weddings of up to 200 people, this venue should be specially noted for its live entertainment and late closing times. You may order food up to 1:00 a.m. weekdays, 2:00 a.m on Fridays and Saturdays, and on Sundays!

So whether it's KRW or on a regular week, swing your hips on Tuesday's Latin night; relax with a brandy during Althea Hewitt's cabaret on Wednesdays; listen to Caribbean Cliff steel pan's calypsos on Thursdays; request your favourites from Floyd Foulks on Fridays; sing along with Charmaine Limonious' folk music on Saturdays; and appreciate a variety of jazz artistes during Sunday brunch.
