In-form Rusea's advance
published: Thursday | October 18, 2007

Adrian Frater, News Editor

WESTERN BUREAU:

RUSEA'S CLIMBED into the inter-zone round of the ISSA /Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup yesterday when they scored a 2-0 win over Cambridge in their second round Zone B fixture at the UDC field in Montego Bay.

"This is one of the many hurdles we intend to cross this season as we set our sights on winning another title," said Rusea's coach, Anthony 'Follies' Williams. "The playing conditions were not great but the boys did what they had to do."

While Rusea's moved their points tally to 21, Frome Technical, their main rivals for group honours and the zone's lone Ben Francis Cup Knockout place, were also in fine fettle, hammering Green Island 4-0 to move up to 18 points. They are also expected to get full points from their game against Knockalva, which was not played.

Rusea's, who scored through striker Ricardo Brown and skipper Damain Thompson (penalty), looked quite fluent for most of their game but a number of missed chances prevented them from winning by a much wider margin.

Brown's goal, which came in the 17th minute, was a beauty as he out-jumped a Cambridge defender for a superb corner by Garfield Duncan and nodded powerfully out of the reach of a diving goalkeeper Donavan Shakes. Thompson's goal came after referee Delroy Harding saw an infringement and ruled penalty. Over in the competitive Zone C, Grange Hill booked their place in the competition's inter-zone round when they clipped Maud McLeod 1-0 to move to an unassailable 21 points. Petersfield (18) and Godfrey Stewart (16) kept alive their hopes of moving into inter-zone play with 5-2 and 2-1 wins over Mannings and Little London respectively.
