BERBICE, Guyana (CMC):
THE WEST Indies Under-19 side, undermined by a record seven-wicket haul by Pedro Collins, succumbed for the lowest score in the history of regional limited-overs cricket in crashing to a heavy eight-wicket defeat to Barbados in their KFC Cup match at Blairmont yesterday.
After opting to bat first on winning the toss, the young Caribbean players were dismissed for a paltry 18 in 14.3 overs and Barbados lost two wickets in completing an easy victory after reaching the target in 5.5 overs to secure two bonus points.
Moving the ball around with telling effect, Collins grabbed seven for 11 off 7.3 overs against batsmen who seemed to be at sea.
The West Indies Under-19s, competing in the tournament in preparation for next year's ICC Youth World Cup, failed by some distance to get near the previous lowest total at this level - 48 by Bermuda against Windward Islands at Kensington Park in Jamaica in 1999.
Collins' haul was also a new record, bettering the seven for 15 by Leeward Islands' Hamish Anthony against Barbados at the Antigua Recreation Ground in 1995.
The West Indies Under-19s' woes started with the first ball of the second over when Fidel Edwards bowled left-hander Kieran Powell with a ball of full length.
Brittle line-up
Collins then held centre stage to wipe away at a brittle line-up in which six batsmen were dismissed without scoring.
The youngsters quickly slumped to two runs for five wickets as Collins produced several deliveries that cut back to earn him four lbw decisions.
In a sad scorecard, Shamarh Brooks made the top score of seven and there were six wides.
Collins collected his first wicket when opener Rashidi Boucher edged a fine delivery to the keeper and collected his second as Darren Bravo, a younger brother of West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, gave a catch to second slip from an attempted drive.
Captain Stephen Jacobs was lbw first ball as he was late in coming forward to a ball that cut back and without addition, Devon Thomas edged a defensive stroke from Edwards to first slip.
The procession of wickets continued to the disappointment of a fair-sized crowd.
Edwards finished with two for four from five overs, and Dwayne Smith, who replaced him in the attack, chipped in with the other wicket.
When Barbados responded, promising fast bowler Jason Dawes removed Martin Nurse for three to an edged catch to the keeper and Dale Richards was lbw as he played slightly across.
Barbados, however, had no further problems in completing their target.
With the match finished before midday, the two teams agreed to play a Twenty20 match which Barbados won by 23 runs.
The teams return to action tomorrow when Barbados meet the Leeward Islands at Bourda and West Indies Under-19s clash with Jamaica at Enmore.
