Cornella Lawes tops Ka-Ju contest
published: Friday | October 26, 2007

André Jebbinson, Staff Reporter

The work had been done and a beaming Cornella Lawes expresses confidence as she is announced winner of the Ka-Ju Fashion Designers Competition held at Mae's Entertainment Centre last Sunday.

Cornella Lawes' purple detailed dress stood out above the rest at the Ka-Ju Fashion Designer's competition on Sunday night at Mae's, Ken Hill Drive, Pembroke Hall, St. Andrew. After she 'out-designed' the other designers, she was at a loss for words and could only say "thanks".

The designers put on a show with outfits ranging from the very skimpy to those that did not conserve on fabric. One such design that caught the audience's attention was an African wrap designed by Maxine Scarlet. An ankle-length baby doll dress by Andre Shirley was also eye-catching.

The designers used a lot of earth tones and black to carry off their designs. There was also a lot of African-inspired looks.

Swimwear segment

After the competition segment was over the evening turned into a regular fashion show, with designs from Ka-Ju, Athena, Ruth-Ann, Shakira, and Greg. The different segments had designs for every occasion, whether formal, casual, work or swimwear. The men got an eyeful, especially in the swimwear segment. The women too had their favourite model and they exploded with screams once they saw him.

Particular attention was paid to the work section, with designs that many professionals could pull off.

The presentation to the winner was made by entertainer, Queen Ifrica, on behalf of Flames Production. She also performed Below The Waist and Daddy a cappella.

The Ka-Ju Fashion Institute has been in operation for 20 years and seeks to give women a skill to better themselves.
