Windies looking to rebound from loss
published: Sunday | December 2, 2007

HARARE, Zimbabwe (CMC):

THE WEST Indies will be looking to rebound from a stunning defeat when they face Zimbabwe in the second one-day international today at the Harare Sports Club.

The West Indies were jolted into reality when the Zimbabweans upset them by 30 runs in the opening match of the five ODI series on Friday at the same venue.

The visitors had a long training session yesterday and West Indies captain Chris Gayle asserted they will be going all out to turn the tables on the home side.

Side outplayed

"We saw what Zimbabwe can offer and we will be going out there to do much better and make sure what happened on Friday does not happen again," Gayle said. "We have to prepare well in all the areas where we fell down. We did not do well in the batting and the bowling, and we will want to change that on Sunday."

Gayle admitted that his side was outplayed in every department and Zimbabwe were deserving winners of Friday's contest.

The hosts restricted the West Indies to 244 for eight from 50 overs, after they had posted 274 for eight from their allocation of 50 overs.

"To be honest, they outplayed us in every department, in every category," he said. "They bowled better, batted better and were very good in the field. They won the match because they simply were better than us."

Gayle admits the West Indies will have to come back strong if they are to challenge their opponents in the five-match series.

"We will have to lift ourselves and pull up our socks," he said. "We fell down, but we will bounce back.

"We never underestimated Zimbabwe. We respect them. We have no excuses. We played badly and lost."

For Zimbabwe, the onus is now on them to prove that the opening match win was no fluke.

The victory was only their second in their last 23 ODIs and their first against a side rated higher than them since they also beat the West Indies four years ago.

Zimbabwe will look to sustain the intensity they showed in the first ODI throughout the course of the series.
