The Editor, Sir:I would like to personally thank Don Wehby for insisting that Air Jamaica and the Sugar Company of Jamaica be divested if the Government is to cut the fiscal deficit and reduce the public debt.
For too long, these entities have been a burden to the taxpayers and on the limited resources of this country. Mr. Wehby clearly sees that pursuing prosperity and maintaining these losses is a conflict of interest.
Being fresh from a blue-chip private sector company, he has an appreciation for creating value while making a profit.
Musical chairs
The operations of Air J and the SCJ have been analogous to playing musical chairs - hoping there is a chair to sit in when the music stops.
Also, Mr. Wehby's bold steps in pursuing tax reform cannot be discounted either. Every support should be given to him in the concrete manifestations of these bold pronouncements. If not, the chips of today will become the boulders of tomorrow.
I am, etc.,
