Simple decorating ideas for Christmas
published: Sunday | December 9, 2007

The secret of improving surroundings when you do not have a lot of money is to accessorise, accessorise, accessorise, and this week, we will show you how.

At Azmart, we found numerous pieces to accessorise and work magic with the humblest of surroundings.

Mirrors, framed pictures and metal decorative items add dimension and atmosphere to your décor.

Purchase items to match the mood you are attempting to create. For a contemplative atmosphere, you can use a water fountain on a low table or have a bamboo plant in a simple planter.

Another accessory you could display to add interest to your décor is decorative pillows. Use decorative pillows piled at the head of your bed, on the couch or on chairs in your living room.

Other tips

Paint is often a cheap and relatively easy way to change the look and feel of a room.

Wallpaper can also change your room in an instant.

For your bedroom, you might want to add some scented candles, some fresh lavender, or even an inexpensive water feature.

Flowers make a difference. Wreaths, blankets, flowers, candles and tablecloths can all bring the colours, scents, and sights of the season into your home, with minimum cost.

Cupboard doors make the biggest visual impact in the kitchen, so consider painting them for a quick change.

Door handles come in a wide range of materials: porcelain, brass, stainless steel. They can radically change the look of a kitchen and are easy to add.

Lighting can be too bright. Try a pendant fitting or, for a cheape attach plug-in or clip-on lights to shelves.

If you cannot afford new appliances, improve an existing kitchen by rethinking the layout and, using the same modules, rearrange the food preparation and cooking spaces.

Refinishing doors can also add to the new look of your décor.

Mix different finishes and materials to add interest.
