Errors in a 'Gleaner' article
published: Monday | December 10, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I am compelled to write to you based on an article 'Local government elections - the biggest losers' authored by Daraine Luton and published on Sunday, December 9.

The article says I am a two-time loser which is totally incorrect. My bid for the Trafalgar division on December 5 is the first time I have offered myself as a candidate in any election.

Second, the article gives the impression that superficial things like brochures and fans were the essence of the campaign. It's unfortunate that this is given prominence vs the door-to-door direct "issues-based" campaigning which characterised my campaign.

Third, the article makes no mention of the fact that the Trafalgar division was lost by the PNP in the general election of September 3, by 370 votes and lost by the PNP's candidate Larel Thomas in the June 2003 local government elections by 169 votes. So even in defeat, I was able significantly to reduce the margin by which the PNP lost the division.

I am, etc.,

JULIAN ROBINSON

Kingston
