Stop this 'Trinivasion'
published: Wednesday | December 19, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

What is the Government doing about moves by Trinidadians to own more Jamaican companies?

If this trend continues pretty soon they will own our beloved country! This would be a very dark day indeed. To break into their market is like trying to penetrate the Berlin Wall. Try buying a piece of real estate in Trinidad and you will discover that once they hear your accent and realise you are Jamaican the deal will be off.

So, why are we allowing them to come here and buy up our better companies? Are we so poor and destitute that we have no control over this? Next thing they will ask for a seat in the Senate in order to protect their interest in our country.

Anomaly

If you look at our balance of payment in trade between them and us you will see a grave anomaly as we are buying from them way in excess of the little they are buying from us.

We owe it to our children to protect this land and all its assets for them and them only. After all, this is precisely what they are doing in Trinidad, so why come here and do what they certainly will not allow us to do in Trinidad?

We have allowed them to come here and get a foot in our insurance industry, in soft drinks and now our rum. Lascelles is one of our better group of companies and we should stop this take-over! In fact, all companies listed on the stock exchange are now vulnerable as we do not know which of our companies will be next.

I am, etc.,

SYLVESTER PINNOCK

St. Catherine
