Johnson set for WBC title bout
published: Saturday | December 22, 2007

MIAMI, Florida (CMC):

Jamaica's former world champion Glen 'The Road Warrior' Johnson is likely to face the unbeaten Chad Dawson for the American's World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight title in April.

It is being reported that Dawson has agreed to face Johnson in a nationally televised clash on Showtime Championship Boxing on April 12 at the St. Pete's Times Forum in Tampa.

The 25-year-old Dawson has a glittering record of 25-0 with 17 knock-outs, but the veteran Johnson is confident he can handle the rising star.

"It's a great match-up. He has fast hands, he's a southpaw, he's young. They say that he's the future of the division, and he just might be, but I am the present right now," said the 38-year-old Johnson.

Warm-up outing

Johnson is expected to have a warm-up outing on January 5 in New Jersey against Mike Culbert. With a ring record of 46 wins (31 knockouts) against 11 defeats and two draws, Johnson ruled the world light heavyweight 175-pound class during 2004 and is anxious to recapture his position at the top of the division.

In 2004, Johnson was voted 'World Fighter of the Year', after defeating Clinton Woods and highly regarded Roy Jones and Antonio Tarver.

Florida-based Johnson, originally from Clarendon in central Jamaica, had a bout with former world champion Reggie Johnson cancelled last month and he is not convinced that his opponent was injured as he reported.

"Well, Reggie didn't get hurt, he got scared. We are past that now. This (Culbert bout) will be a stay busy fight," Johnson said.

Johnson has frequently complained that big name boxers shy away from him and he is happy that Dawson has agreed to face him.
