issue: Ban the violence in music!
published: Saturday | January 12, 2008

I am disgusted and fearful of the messages being promoted daily by artistes, radio stations and sound systems, all in the name of freedom of speech. Our country is going down the drain while these few flourish from the gains of their dreadful labour.

Every day we see and hear the news of murder of babies and old people because it is accepted in society when artistes promote violence against enemies or the enemies' families. I am not saying that this is the single cause of violence in Jamaica, but I think this plays a major role in the increase in incidents occurring daily.

In Jamaica, a large portion of our population is illiterate, and so when violence is promoted and accepted by society, we find that instead of trying to solving problems in society, schools and homes, we 'WAR' it out. How can we continue to live in a society where every day we hear ways of how one kills his/her enemy. Shooting, chopping, burning and bagging are some of the words used to describe these acts. This is being promoted by entertainers, radio stations, sound systems. This has to stop!

I am proposing that we ban such music in public by artistes, producers, radio stations and sound systems with penalties such as fines of $500,000 or six months in prison. Drastic measures require drastic action!

I am sending an appeal to our new Government please do something now to stop this trend of evil, so my six-year-old son will stop singing about 'shot up and chop up'.
