Career: 8 things you should do at an interview
published: Saturday | January 12, 2008

Tyrone Wilson, Gleaner Reporter

1.Be on time

Public transport may be useless if the traffic is heavy. Lateness will at most times ruin your chances of getting a job; therefore, all efforts should be made to reach an interview on time.

2.Be prepared

An interview requires a lot of knowledge about the company and its operations. It also involves selling yourself in the best way possible.

3.Make a good first impression

First, keep in mind that you never get a second chance to make a first impression, so be careful. Remember:

Smiling is one of the things which may matter.

Give a firm handshake, it evokes self-assurance.

Eye contact without glaring is a display of your confidence.

4Do not talk too much

Communication is a two-way street. Avoiding talking too much, give the interviewer a chance and do not interrupt while he or she is talking. It is important to listen to the question being asked and answer it carefully. Keep your answers to two to three minutes at the most. When you limit your time, you tend to stay more focused.

5.Make your qualification visible

Throughout the interview, your qualities should be the most distinct feature inside the room. In everything you do, the way you sit, speak and look should at first glance display a first-class candidate for the job.

6.Dress to reflect the image of a business professional

By preparing, you should know what job you are applying for. Ensure that you dress in the most appropriate outfit to fit the criteria of the job being applied for. This reflects someone who is knowledgeable about his or her environment.

7Carry the necessary documents

Bring multiple copies of your resume, list of references, and (if appropriate) any work samples, and complete the company application neatly and in its entirety.

8.

De-emphasise money and fringe benefits

We all know that a job is a means to an income and a better lifestyle, but this must not be flaunted. Avoid emphasising the rewards of the job, that is, the salary along with the benefits. Talk more about your contribution to the workplace and how you will add to the overall development of the company or organisation.
