Political guidance from the Bible
published: Tuesday | January 15, 2008

THE EDITOR, Sir:

As I looked on the photograph in Friday's Gleaner, January 4, 'Heal the Family, Heal the Nation' prayer conference at the National Arena, Prime Minister Golding pensive, his eyes opened, hands folded in front of him, Bishop Blair in the middle, hands resting on Messrs Golding and Mrs. Portia Simpson Miller on the left, her eyes closed, hands folded on her chest, she looked humble and meditative, my thought was, why political leaders do not pray more often in public? Religio-political leaders do pray for empowerment and prosperity and good success.

God directed Joshua on the condition for success. Joshua 1:6-9, Daniel interceded for Israel in repentance for answered prayer. Daniel Chapter 9; Elijah on Mt. Carmel confronted King Ahab on behalf of God and offered sacrifice. Kings 18:17-46; King David prayed when he committed adultery with Uriah's wife and then murder, Psalm 51 is the prayer.

Let the Bible speak

Why when most people pray, God does not hear nor answer to our petitions? Let the Bible speak: Jeremiah 7:16, Proverb 28:9: "He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, (Commandments) even his prayer shall be an abomination", Prov. 6: 16-19. Psalm 66:18 - "If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me", Mark 11:24 James 1:6: "Ask in faith, nothing wavering ... "

We should also note: contention and discord quench the spirit of prayer 1 Peter 3:1-7. Many grieve the spirit and drive Christ from their homes by giving way to impatience and passion. Angels of God flee from homes where there is contention and strife. "Pray for them and do good to them that hate you and deceitfully use and persecute you". (Math 5:44)
