Trelawny league to kick off
published: Friday | January 18, 2008

WESTERN BUREAU:

JAMAICA FOOTBALL Federation president, Captain Horace Burrell, will be the guest speaker at today's launch of the 2008 National Rums of Jamaica-sponsored Trelawny Major League competition, which will take place at the boardroom of the Trelawny Fire Station in Falmouth at 3:00 p.m.

"This is a very important milestone in the relationship between the Trelawny Football Association (TFA) and National Rums of Jamaica, as it is the 25th year since we have had this sponsorship," said Delroy Downer, the TFA's public relations officer.

"There are not enough words to describe how grateful we are to National Rums."

Anticipating increase

While the full sponsorship deal will not be known until this afternoon, an optimistic Downer said he was anticipating that there will be an increase over last year's $800,000 sponsorship package.

"Money is not our primary concern at this time. Our objective is to get out all the teams today to show our collective appreciation to the sponsor," said Downer.

"We want National Rums to know that their sponsorship has been doing great things for the development of football in this parish."

With last year's champions Duanvale not competing this year due to their elevation to the Captain's Bakery Western Super League, this year's competition should be quite competitive with eight teams vying for the coveted title and a chance to play Super League football in 2008-09 season.
