St Lucia, Cayman Islands ready to launch fireworks
published: Saturday | January 26, 2008

Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

COOLIDGE, Antigua:

ST Lucia, one of four Stanford Pro Teams, and The Cayman Islands will get the action under way in this year's Stanford 20/20 tournament at the Stanford Cricket Ground at 6:15 p.m.

Both teams have expressed confidence going into the opening clash, especially since they scored opening-round victories last year.

St Lucia defeated the British Virgin Islands and The Cayman Islands beat The Bahamas, who Jamaica will play in their opening match on February 6.

St Lucia's captain, Garey Mathurin, says they have a good all-round team.

"We have some youngsters, so we are going to get the enthusiasm on the field, a lot of energy," he said.

Windward Islands' Under-19 players Johnson Charles and Keddy Lesporis, along with Mathurin and Shervin Charles, will lead the team's batting while Wendell Roberts, Xavier Gabriel and Alleyne Prospere are the front-line bowlers.

The Cayman Islands' team is also very balanced and their captain, Pearson Best, anticipates another long stay in Antigua.

As for today's match, he said they would be looking to score at least 200.

"We are looking, if we bat first, to score 200 and if we score that, I am sure our bowlers can defend that," he said.

Best, who scored 74 off 40 balls against The Bahamas last year and Saheed Mohammed, who supported with 64, should once again lead the team's batting.

Kenute Tulloch, who registered the first five-wicket haul (5-21) in the tournament, and Conroy Wright, are their main bowlers.
