Harbour View turn back Olympic

Defending champions Harbour View eventually cruised their way through to the quarter-final round of the Western Union Jackie Bell Knockout competition, but they encountered a spirited performance from Major League team Olympic Gardens, despite a 3-0 scoreline.

In fact, it wasn't until the 67th minute, in circumstances that greatly angered the Olympic Gardens fans, that the Premier League team eventually broke the deadlock.

Bolting down the right flank, Harbour View's Robert Scarlett looked to be impeded in the area by Olympic Gardens defender Jerome Gayle. However, the crowd thought a penalty call against their bravely struggling team was too harsh.

Despite the protests, Clifton Waugh stepped up to the spot and put the Stars of the East ahead, 1-0.

From there things seemed to go downhill for Olympic as just six minutes later, unmarked substitute Kemar Petrekin rose high to head Harbour View further ahead at 2-0.

Lovel Palmer finished things off in the 83rd minute with an easy tap-in, after a shot by Petrekin, that was initially saved, ended up at his feet.

Tough call

"I'm not blaming the refereeing but the call was kind of a tough one and sometimes those things can really drop your spirits," said Olympic assistant coach, Donald Jackson.

Harbour View coach Lenworth Hyde thought his team started slowly, but progressed as the game went on.

"The conditions out there are tough, but the longer the game went on the more things would be in our favour because of our conditioning. Hats off to them (Olympic), though, they gave us a good match," he added.

Meanwhile, Super League team Cavalier pulled off the only upset, stunning August Town 4-2 on penalties. The game was scoreless after regulation and extra time.

Tivoli Gardens left it late to upstage Rae Town, as two stoppage-time goals saw them prevail 3-1 over the home team at Breezy Castle. At full time the score had been 1-1.

At Up Park Camp, Duhaney Park clipped the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) 1-0, hosts Seaview Gardens were turned back 3-2 by Bull Bay at Seaview Oval, Arnett Gardens beat Swallowfield 2-0 at Stadium East and Waterhouse clipped Santos 2-1 at the Bell Chung Oval.
