Troubles with the new bus system
published: Monday | February 4, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I am a very frequent reader of your paper and have also written to you previously. My concern this time is the service given by the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC). I am not one to condemn or speak badly about change or new developments, but I have experienced the change and so far it has not worked in my favour once.

I live in the Washington Gardens area and travel the No. 75 bus route. For the past three weeks I have been travelling on the buses and every single morning I have either been late for school or work. With the old system, I could have left home and got to the bus stop by, let's say, 6:15 a.m. and would be able to reach work in Papine about 7:20 a.m. Now, if I get to the bus stop the same time, I reach work at 8:15 a.m. or later. The transportation system needs to be revised thoroughly and the authorities need to come up with a system that suits the commuters and not the bus company.

Long wait

We are (or supposed to be) the valued customers of this service, and every morning you enter the bus park someone has a grouse with the system. Just to highlight one incident, one morning I waited for a No. 75 for more than 15 minutes. When it got to the centre, it went all the way around to the 900 terminal which was full of people waiting to transfer to a 900 bus. Eventually supervisors directed us to rejoin the same bus we had alighted from instead of telling the driver to proceed to Papine, seeing that the bus was already loaded with passengers going to Papine.

There was much screaming and cursing by angry passengers who were faced with the same situation. So, I am just imploring the 'thinkers' in authority to come up with better ways of offering this very critical service.

I am, etc.,

SIMONE SAMPSON
