Waterhouse qualified for the second End-of-Round final following a 1-1 draw with August Town in a keenly contested Cash Plus Premier League match at UWI Bowl yesterday.
With the draw, the Drewsland team ended with the second highest number of points in the second round, 21, next the 22 accumulated by Tivoli Gardens, who had booked their spot early. The relatively strong Waterhouse contingent have now moved to 37 points in the overall standings, three behind joint overall leaders Portmore United and Tivoli Gardens, with 40 each.August Town, who are second from bottom in the league, moved to 22 points.
Under pressure
Going into yesterday's last set of second-round fixtures, Waterhouse were under pressure from Harbour View three points adrift for the bonus final spot, but the draw was enough to see them through.A goal from striker Mitchily Waul in time added for stoppages delivered August Town from yet another defeat.Hugh McCarthy, coach of August Town, believed the team performed well overal contending that they wasted some of their goal scoring opportunities. He is confident that with further training they will improve their current form and return to winning ways."It is unfortunate that we did not win, the team fought hard. We played better in the first half and basically had the half to ourselves. In the second half we faced little opposition and with that said we should have won the game," McCarthy noted.
Penalty
A cohesive Waterhouse team was given the lead in the 45th minute from Irvino English, courtesy of a penalty awarded when Aphas Bernard fouled an opponent six yards from goal.Although playing comfortably in the first half, Waterhouse lost their composure in the second half and a defensive error resulted in August Town equalising in time added for stoppages.A disappointed Wayne Fairclough, coach of Waterhouse, was not bemused by the fact that August Town came from behind and registered a goal that late, much to their demise."We squandered our chances in the first half and our defence went down in the second half which resulted in a goal for August Town. It is a very disappointing result for us as we had ball possession for most of the game," he said.
