Low patron turnout mars curry festival
published: Wednesday | March 26, 2008

PORT ANTONIO, Portland:

Although marred by a low turnout, the annual Portland curry festival, held on Sunday, provided quality entertainment for those who supported the charitable event.

The event, which was heavily promoted, boasted dozens of reggae artiste's including the Twins of Twins duo, who gave a cameo performance, and veteran DJ Spragga Benz.

The few dozen patrons at the event were caught up dining on curried chicken, goat, shrimp, lobster, and fish. They literally screamed in welcoming the Twins when they took the stage about 9:00 p.m.

Their performance began with the piece Nah Trust Nuh Rising Star, which spoke about a rising star contestant who was allegedly caught sharing a bath with another man.

Good performance

The performance got better with the twins relating the Bling Dawg stage show incident in comical fashion. They also hit out against men who are murdering children, and reiterated their new stance of performing clean lyrics.

As expected, Spragga's performance was exceptional as he reeled off hits of the past, along with a barrage of pre-releases. Earlier, Queen Sheba, a local act, gave a stellar performance, which had patrons screaming for more.

Thankful for support

Event promoter, Sonia Patterson, explained that proceeds from the festival would go towards assisting the Patterson's Community and Youth Club. She said that plans are in place to build a community centre at Boundbrook, in Portland, to assist young persons in the various sporting disciplines.

"The turnout was small, but we are thankful for the support," she said. "Next year's event is going to be bigger and better. I would like to thank all the sponsors, friends, and family members, who assisted in this year's event."

The event was held at the beach at Shan Shay, in Port Antonio, and the backing band was Razor, which featured recording artiste and keyboard player, Javon 'Genius' Bond, who is also a member of Damion Marley's band.
