Sidewalk problem
published: Saturday | April 12, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I was in the island for a short visit last week. I worked in the government service so I have a deep understanding of many issues and problems. But there are solutions to all problems. This is a little one. I am proud of all developments for progress on the island as some people work hard to see them through.

I walked from Half-Way Tree to Cross Roads on Wednesday, April 9, between 4 and 5 p.m. after beating a quick retreat from the new bus terminal which I have been longing to see. I admit I went there the wrong time … the younger generation galore and the associated noise! But that is another small problem! I like walking, so I exercised that option.

On my walk, there was a sidewalk. Here is the small problem: The left-hand side-walk going towards Cross Roads ... approaching the Ministry of Health (of all ministries!) hostel for nurses or whatever it is now used for … SUDDEN STOP! The sidewalk is blocked by a small hill of sorts protruding either from the hostel or the adjoining premises.

wait for a lull

My concern was that I now had to join the traffic moving south! Zoom! Zoom! Zoom! Bike man, Bus man, Car man, Coaster man, Taxi man, Truck man! I had to wait for a lull, become an item of traffic, with no rear-view mirror, watch mi back and motor on to the next bit of sidewalk after I passed the opening to the premises.

I did not look back at the place at which death was imminent so maybe some things are not correct, but I'm sure that there was a hill and that I had to use the traffic lane!

Unless it is the tomb of some sacred god, is it possible for the structure to be truncated at the fence line? One small problem!

I am, etc.,
