SE Florida take top spot, Jamaica second
published: Friday | May 23, 2008

Keisha Hill, Staff Reporter

SOUTH-EAST Florida (748) emerged winners of the Kitty Michael 30th annual invitational ladies golf tournament played at the Cinnamon Hill golf course earlier this month.

Despite a three-day total of 230 by Jodi Barrow, who won the individual low gross title, Jamaica placed second with a score of 768, 20 strokes behind the winners.

Jamaica's success

From a total of 10 team members, those also contributing to Jamaica's success included Leiza Blakeley, Herma Coe and Cynthia Tuckey.

The coveted award for the team with the lowest net score was won by Puerto Rico (646) by a margin of 19 strokes.

The overall low net for the tournament was won by 20-handicapper Atheline Aponte, Puerto Rico's youngest team member, who finished with a net score of 209 - or four under par from a gross of 269.

Most of the participating teams won daily prizes, including South-East Florida with four awards, and Baltursrol, Puerto Rico, Bermuda and Lyford Cay (Bahamas).

Lowest score

Robin Nordhoff (Lyford Cay) had the lowest score (82) on day three, with Jodi Barrow owning days one and two with 74 and 73 respectively. The lowest individual score was 65 by Susan Binder of Baltursrol who carded an 88 off a 23 handicap. The lowest number of putts was 87 by Sissy McCabe of Baltursrol.

The event, hosted for the third time by Jamaica on the challenging par-71 golf course, saw teams participating from the Caribbean and North America including Canada, South-East Florida, South-West Florida, Ocean Reef, Baltursrol, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Curacao, Trinidad, Barbados and hosts Jamaica.

The 2009 Kitty Michael tournament will be hosted by South-East Florida at Doral in Miami from May 11-16.
