The Editor, Sir:
In a discussion on a radio station on March 17, it was suggested that one way to reduce the effect of the increasingly high cost of gas was to make more use of public transportation. To do this, I am suggesting certain changes in the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) system, as it relates to the Portmore to downtown Kingston route.
Routes terminating in town should be extended to King and Orange streets in the mornings between the 6:30 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. and in the afternoons between 3:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. The buses would offload passengers then return to where they now end the inward journey. Many employees whose offices are on King, Orange and Duke streets now use their cars to go to work because they are either scared of walking from the present drop-off point or find it too far to walk.
Maybe this idea was not accepted before as it may have been deemed to be reducing the amount the toll operators would collect. This plan should be implemented on an experimental basis and adequately advertised. Added revenue would result to JUTC, fewer petrol would be used and fewer vehicles would be on the road.
I am, etc.,
