HOTTEST TOPICS ON THE COCKTAIL CIRCUIT

Blame Playboy!

1. It was one of those overseas business trips which turned the home into a house of horrors. As usual, the helper was left in charge of domestic affairs. So, when missus returned home, the helper sensed that she was in a foul mood and decided to give a full confession about what happened when the husband came home and caught her watching an X-rated channel. We hear none of the saucy details were omitted. So now the helper has been fired, the husband is in the kennel and life will never be the same.

Escort services

2. Early morning emergencies in the Corporate Area are not likely to be answered with any speed because we have learnt that several police officers have a huge chunk of their day dedicated to escorting deep-pocket businessmen. Public resources (human and capital) are being diverted to protect a few powerful people when the majority is often told there is no vehicle to come to a crime scene. Surely private security firms should be employed to provide such service.

A Hoax

3. Speaking of emergencies, JUTC drivers ought to be aware that there are signs such as 'Call Police' and 'Emergency' which appears on their notice boards. Recently, a concerned motorist noticed a bus along the gritty Mountain View Avenue displaying the sign 'Call Police'. She dashed to the nearest police station to report the matter, which she considered her civic duty, only to be told to ignore it ... no big thing. One day there will be a real emergency and perhaps innocent lives will be taken.

Dilemma of the Red Cap

4. New airline rules are forcing passengers to forego goodies and pack only the bare necessities. Weight limit and new charges for luggage have led to passengers fighting for space in overhead bins as they cram all they can into carry-ons. But the red cap porters who assist passengers with their luggage are finding fewer and fewer people are demanding their service. They are the forgotten ones in this equation and the tourism ministry needs to consider integrating them into the service instead of allowing them to fall on the scrap heap of unemployment.

Life is so cheap

5. It is simply amazing to hear the reaction to the recent murder of the JUTC chairman. "He was crass"; "He treated people like dirt". "He wanted to box food from man mouth", are some the comments we have heard which seem intended to justify his murder. It seems we have lost our moral grounding and no longer can recognise right from wrong in this country.
