Against road licence for deaf
published: Friday | July 4, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I read the article about the Government giving the green light to give the deaf licence to drive on Jamaican roads.

I strongly oppose this. What if an emergency vehicle is coming with the siren on, driving in the day, and they can't see the siren light flashing? This would only cause more accidents to drivers, the deaf and emergency drivers.

I give an example of such an event which happened in the vicinity of the Hellshire main road and intersection. A fire truck was coming from the Hellshire main road when, at the intersection, it collided with a car, which was playing loud music.

With the windows up, the driver could not hear the siren. A man's feet were smashed by the fire truck and he later died. What if the same thing were to happen with a deaf person, who would get the blame?

The Government should put the red light on issuing licences to the deaf.

I am, etc.,
