The Editor, Sir:I strongly endorsed Mark Pike's letter to the Editor in the Saturday Gleaner, dated June 27, and I quote:
"I, therefore, recommend that a comprehensive corporate social responsibility rating system be carried out and publicised with a specific rating for how well companies contribute towards youth development."
Thousands of teenagers are leaving the high schools each year, many of whom are still unemployed years later. I had read with dismay about companies that "generally employ university graduates" and these questions arise:
(a) Are there sufficient universities/colleges to accommodate the number of high school graduates each year?
(b) What will happen to students who meet university/college requirements but cannot afford tuition fee and students who will never qualify for student loans?
(c) If these companies were also to select university graduates as their clientele or customers, would their net profit be as it is currently?
University/College graduates are not the ones creating mayhem in this little island. Jamaica certainly doesn't need more angry, young men roaming the streets with guns in hand or more young girls entering into prostitution for survival.
We need youth empowerment! After all, they are the future of tomorrow.
I am, etc,
