Jamaican women uncorked three victories at the IAAF Rome Golden League track and field meeting yesterday.
Kerron Stewart, Brigitte Foster-Hylton and Melaine Walker registered wins on the third stop in the rich Golden League series, where Russian Yelene Isinbaeva set a new women's pole vault record of 5.03 metres.
Stewart, the new Jamaica national 100-metre champion, ran a solid race to take the women's 200 in 22.34 seconds, chased by Jamaica-born American Sanya Richards (22.49) and the French runner Muriel Hurtis-Houairi (22.50).
Jamaican Sherone Simpson (22.88) placed sixth.
one-two finish
Foster-Hylton led a Jamaica one-two finish in the women's 100-metre hurdles. She won in 12.60 seconds with Delloreen Ennis-London (12.62) a close second. Candice Davis, of the USA, was third 12.72.
In the women's 400 hurdles, Walker continued to advertise good form ahead of the Beijing Olympics, landing the event in 54.36 seconds. Poland's Anna Jesien (54.71) was second and Jamaican Shevon Stoddart fourth in 54.98 seconds.
Jamaican Ricardo Chambers (44.96) scored a good win in Race Two of the men's 400 metres, ahead of Trinidad and Tobago's Ato Stephens (45.62) and Jamaican Sanjay Ayre (45.77) in a Caribbean sweep of the top spots.
Race One went to the Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner (44.36) as he avenged his US Olympic Trials loss to LaShawn Merritt (44.37).
Bahamian Chris Brown was third in 44.73 seconds.
There were three other top three results for CARICOM athletes.
Jamaicans Novlene Williams (50.79) and Shericka Williams (50.83) were second and third, respectively, in the women's 400 behind American Allyson Felix (50.25) and Jamaica's Athens Olympics silver medallist, Danny McFarlane (48.57), was third in the men's 400 hurdles behind Americans Kerron Clement (48.23) and Bershawn Jackson (48.34).
