The Editor, Sir:
With reference to Garth Rattray's Monday column 'Sick, morbid curiosity', I'm glad to see that I'm not the only person who's deeply disturbed by our people's fascination with the macabre.
This has been bothering me ever since the mentally disturbed man jumped to his death at the Kingston Public Hospital, egged on by the mob below, who were also busy taking photos with their camera phones. How can people be so callous, if not downright evil? It is totally beyond my comprehension. It is quite consistent, however, with our general lack of reverence for life.
The electronic media think nothing of showing us bloodstains at crime scenes during the nightly news, hence, many of my friends with young children no longer let them (the children) watch the news.
We need to get back to basics, teaching our children that sex is 'big people someting', that life is sacred, so it should not be taken away at the slightest 'dis', and that people's dignity should be protected in life as well as in death.
I am, etc,
KAREN HENRY
