Denbigh 2k8 - Tourism, agriculture link on first day
published: Friday | August 1, 2008

Farmers experiencing difficulty accessing markets for their produce within the hotel industry will have an opportunity to voice their concerns today, as the link between tourism and agriculture will be one of the main areas of focus at the opening of the Denbigh Agricultural and Industrial Show in Clarendon.

President of the Jamaica Agricultural Society, Senator Norman Grant, said the tourism village, which will open its doors today, will consist of at least five hotels.

Inside the village, the exhibitors will host discussions on the importance of the agriculture sector in the advancement of tourism, the country's main source of foreign exchange.

Live demonstrations

Grant said exhibitors would also provide live demonstrations of proper techniques of food preparation in the hotel industry.

"The opening day will be an informative and entertaining day," said Grant.

Other highlights of today's activities are youth in agriculture, with more than 100 young persons from several agricultural organisations scheduled to showcase their best in livestock rearing and ground produce.

The president said the education forum, also scheduled for today, should be exciting as stakeholders will be informed about the booming opportunities in the sector.

Other highlights at today's event include the National Farm Queen competition, a Cooyah design fashion show and a Mitsubishi car show.

Some 100,000 patrons are expected to attend the three-day show that is celebrating its 56th staging.
