Jamaica Gleaner Letters
published: Saturday | August 2, 2008

LETTER OF THE DAY - Avoiding the pitfalls of mandatory sentences
The Editor, Sir:The cardinal purpose of the criminal law is to punish the guilty and protect the innocent.

Genetics of sprinting - Why we will excel at the Olympics

The Editor, Sir: Why is it so hard to believe that a high percentage of persons born from a genetic pool with certain physical attributes will not dominate? Jamaicans are predominantly of West African ancestry.

Vital factors in industrial safety

The Editor, Sir: Recently, there were two excellent letters on industrial safety. Both dealt with the need for legalisation to ensure a safe industrial environment e.g. OSHA - Occupational Safety Health Act - or factories regulation, which, of course, we have had for a long time.

Long detention not the answer

The Editor, Sir: As I read through The Gleaner, I noticed recommendations by the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica about crime in our home-land. Instead of trying imprisonment as a solution, why not address the root cause with social welfare programmes?

Addresses a security factor

The Editor, Sir: Just to comment on Jean B. Seaga-Anderson's letter concerning DNA collection published on July 31.

Saluting 'The Search'

The Editor, Sir: I bought a copy of the book, The Search written by Hartley Neita at Jamaica College two days ago about the five boys who were lost in the Blue Mountains 70 years ago.

Excellent policing in Jamaica

The Editor, Sir: In June 2008, my wife and I travelled from the United Kingdom to stay in our villa in Whitehouse, Westmoreland.
