Late goals sink Spice Boys
WILLEMSTAD, Curacao (CMC):
Two goals in the space of three minutes late in the game handed Netherland Antilles an anxious 2-0 win over Grenada's Spice Boys in the opening round of the Digicel Caribbean Cup Thursday. Playing in Group A at the Ergilio Hato Stadium, John Bacuna struck in the 80th minute before Joshua Bicintini doubled the scoreline three minutes later to wrap up points for the hosts.
Grenada must now hope that their three points are good enough to claim one of the four available second place spots.
Adebayor not moving
LONDON (AP):
Emmanuel Adebayor has agreed to stay at Arsenal after being promised an improved contract, ending speculation he would move to FC Barcelona or AC Milan. The 24-year-old Togo striker, who had three years left on his existing Arsenal contract, said yesterday he hopes to stay until at least 2012 when the deal is signed.
"When I was holidaying there was a lot of speculation," he told Arsenal's official website. "I have never said I will leave the club and there is no one that can say that. Now I can tell everyone that today, yes, I will sign a contract. I'm feeling very good here, very well here and at the moment my heart is with Arsenal."
Fudoh, Shin equal record
SUNNINGDALE, England (AP):
Yuri Fudoh of Japan and Ji-Yai Shin of South Korea shot 4-under 68 yesterday to lead by one stroke and equal the halfway record at the Women's British Open, while Annika Sorenstam's 72 will be just enough to make the cut.
Fudoh and Shin are at 10-under 134 to tie the record set by Jeong Jang of South Korea, who won three years ago at Royal Birkdale. Emilee Klein (1996 at Woburn) and Jane Geddes (1989 at Ferndale) also made 134 over the first two rounds, but that was before it became a major in 2001. Juli Inkster (70) of the United States is one shot back, with Bo Bae Song (68) of South Korea two strokes behind the leaders.
Sorenstam stumbled over the outward nine for the second day in a row, bogeying the fifth, sixth and seventh holes. After shooting 72 Thursday, Sorenstam was at three over after seven holes and in danger of failing to make it to the weekend of her final major before she quits tournament golf at the end of the year.
