NOTE-WORTHY

No undue detention

Nowadays, most of our government systems and agencies are very slow, inefficient, high-style, show-type and almost immune and get away with all wrongdoings already. Unlawful detention time must not be extended any longer than what it is now. Unlawful detention, even for a second, is wrong in the first place. Instead, all relevant departments must work expeditiously to either clear or convict the detained. Control of crime, punishing the criminal etc are very critical but that does not warrant detaining the innocent unduly.

Keep us laughing

Dear Lalah, you are a terrific and insightful writer. You bring everyday happenings in Jamaica to life for those of us who live abroad. 'Haunted House' (31/7/08) was one of the best. It brings back so many memories of long ago. I am a bit squeamish myself, so I can relate to your not wanting to find out what that big 'boom' was. I look forward to your article every week. Keep us laughing, Lalah.

Bold Quill

Dear Dennie Quill, contributor, I applaud you for contribution towards our beautiful country in your column titled 'Jamaica is about you and me' in The Gleaner of August 1. Not too many people like you would be so bold to speak up on what you see and at the same time advocate for changes. I wish there were more people like you in Jamaica. Bravo to you; keep up the good work.

US blessing

The rising cost of food along with widespread hunger over the world is not going unnoticed by the President George W. Bush. The president surprised the United States Congress in early May when he asked the legislators to approve $770 million for global food aid and development programmes. This is an added blessing to the world's poor nations, especially when the United States had already committed to spend a total of $5 billion this year on food aid and related programmes.

In making his request, President Bush reminded the Congress that " ... the American people are generous and compassionate." We are indeed grateful. God bless America!
