Trinidad and Tobago deny Barbados regional double
published: Monday | August 4, 2008

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):

Trinidad and Tobago, behind an excellent all-round performance from Kjorn Ottley won the TCL West Indies Under-19 Challenge one-day title when they defeated Barbados in the final by eight runs at the Banks Breweries Ground on Saturday.

Ottley made a fine unbeaten 68 in helping Trinidad and Tobago to a respectable total of 216 for nine after they won the toss and batted and then took three wickets for 47 runs as Barbados were bowled out for 208 in 49.2 overs.

All-rounder Ottley, who was named Man-of-the-Match, was the mainstay of the Trinidad and Tobago innings, guiding the middle and lower order in a 92-ball knock, which included one four and two sixes.

Captain Adrian Barath and Evin Lewis, who made 37 and 31, respectively, set the tone with an electrifying 74-run opening stand in 11 overs.

In response, Barbados recovered from the early loss of opener Rashidi Boucher for four as captain Kyle Corbin, who made 62 with three sixes and a four off 87 balls and the solid Kraigg Brathwaite, who hit a typically solid 43 off 89 balls, added 102 runs for the second wicket.

Turning the game

Off-spinner Sachin Boodram, who took two for 29 in his 10 overs, turned the game Trinidad and Tobago's way when he trapped Brathwaite leg before wicket on the backfoot and lured Corbin out of his crease for wicketkeeper Rickson Manniram to complete a swift stumping.

Barbados' cause was not helped by the run outs of three batsmen - Marrodon Bend (2), Roston Chase (16) and wicketkeeper Kemal Smith (24), while Ottley made it even more difficult by prising out Jeremy Marshall and Jason Holder.

Towards the end, tailender Shadd Simmons hit a six and a four in making 17 but was caught at mid-off in the final over from leg-spinner Kissondath Magram, which began with 11 runs needed for victory.

Earlier, Barath stroked four fours and a six in a 46-ball knock, while Lewis struck three fours and a six off 44 balls before both were dismissed by the lanky six-footer, Jason Holder, who ended with two for 25.

Apart from Akiel Cooper, who was run out for 17 by a direct throw from Holder, none of the other Trinidadian batsmen got a double digit score.

Leg-spinner Simmons collected the wickets of Yannick Ottley (8) and Sachin Boodram (7) in an economical 10-over spell for 32 runs, as he and off-spinner Roston Chase, who held a low return catch to dismiss Nicholas Alexis for one, put the brakes on the Trinidad and Tobago scoring.

Batsman Brathwaite was also called into service and conceded only 29 runs in 10 overs of flat off-spin while taking the wicket of Manniram.

With Trinidad and Tobago subsiding to 166 for eight, Kjorn Ottley lofted part-time spinner Bend for two sixes while adding 52 vital runs for the last two wickets with pacer Sheldon Dogan and lastman Kissondath Magram.
