JAMAICA'S HOERMAN Cup team made steady, if unspectacular, progress during the second round of the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships in the Cayman Islands yesterday.

The Jamaica men's team started the day in eighth spot but moved up the table to fifth with a combined 596 points.

Defending champions Puerto Rico hold sway with 577, followed by the Dominican Republic (582), Trinidad and Tobago (588) and hosts Cayman Islands (592).

Delroy Johnson, a newcomer to the Hoerman Cup team, along with Paul Thompson and teenager Jonathan Newnham, have two-round totals of 148 each while national champion Xavier Rose is 10-over 152 on the par-71 course.

Newnham, the youngest member of the senior team, has been consistent with scores of three-over 74 on the first two days of the championships.

Meanwhile, Radcliff Knibbs and Gifford Wilmot are in fourth place in the Ramon Baez Trophy for men over 35, after scores of 69 and 68 (137). The Cayman Islands' pair of Colin MacKay and Trent Riggins lead the competition with 135.

Jamaica's women's team of Maggie Lyn, Vittoria Marley and Jodi Barrow are third in the George Teale Trophy competition with a gross score of 297. Puerto Rico are racing away with the section with 278. Trinidad and Tobago are second on 296.

Jamaica's pair of Robert Chin and George Hugh are eighth in the Francis Steele-Perkins Cup for senior men with a gross of 146. Barbados lead with 136. Powerhouse Puerto Rico are second with 137.

In the Higgs and Higgs Trophy for super seniors, Dennis Atkinson and Hamar Dayes are the best placed of the Jamaica teams with a score of 137 for second, behind the Dominican Republic's pair of Rafael Canario and Rafael Octavio Castillos, who are three strokes ahead.
