What a ride!
published: Tuesday | August 19, 2008

Keisha Shakespeare-Blackmore, Staff Reporter

Latoya Grindley (front) is not having much fun while Keisha Shakespeare-Blackmore is trying hard not to show the fear she feels. - Contributed

Once we arrived at the top of Mystic Mountain, all I wanted to do was try out the bobsled ride. We paired up and Latoya and I went together.

The sled started out slowly at first, but within a minute it took off like a rocket. There were screams of terror from Latoya, and I laughed so hard I cried. As we zipped past the 'brake' signs, I shouted, 'brake Latoya! She did not hear a word, as she gripped the gear lever. We went down the track at full speed. Finally, it slowed near the end but the rest of the ride was too slow for my liking.

Biggest coward

Saddled up for the canopy tour, (all except our Lifestyle Editor Barbara Ellington, who was the biggest coward of all), we looked like construction workers. From the beginning, Daviot Kelly and Sacha Walters were not enthused about hanging from a piece of rope, swinging across the jungle like Tarzan. In fact, we had to coerce Sacha into doing it.

The guides, Oren Riley, Seon Walker, Henrick Mordecai and Tunisia Beckford, were very excited to get us started. The first three stages were a breeze (at least for me). After each swing, Daviot was quite distraught and clung to the tree at each platform with an expression that made him look like a fate worse than death awaited him.

Cold feet

We all heard about the surprises on the trail, but none of us were ready for it. Daviot was the first to go. When he did, his scream was so scary, we all got cold feet. As he walked across the swing bridge, he looked like someone who just had an enema.

It took me a good 10 minutes to try. When I did, my heart felt as though it was going to pop through my chest. Latoya told the guides she wanted to use the restroom, so they should be gentle, but they ignored her pleas. When she journeyed out, she screamed and wiggled her legs like she was about to wet herself. Sacha too, was scared out of her wits. Once on solid ground, she threw the guides a few Mike Tyson punches.
