Where are the cops?

It is ironic that the police will go after the taxi and bus drivers while the thugs in Spanish Town go about their business of extortion unimpeded with threats of violence.

I am sure the police in Spanish Town know what is going on but just turn a blind eye. Perhaps they fear for their own lives.

Recently, I was on a bus heading towards May Pen. The bus driver did not go into the park. A 'nice' gentleman rode up on a bicycle and stopped at the driver's window and shouted: "This is the last time I am going to tell you that the bus must go into the bus park. Next time you will see what will happen."

This was in the open where the passengers and passersby could hear. These thugs have no fear.

Instead of going after the bus drivers, the Spanish Town police should patrol the bus park on a daily basis. At least two officers should always be present at the bus park.

Government must act

If the Government is unable to maintain law and order in as relatively a small area as Spanish Town, what chance does it have of bringing down the murder rate?

There is no chance Jamaica can make the economic change it needs to make if people like 'John', quoted in The Sunday Gleaner, are not allowed to invest their money without fear of the police or gangsters ripping them off.

Bruce Golding visited Atlanta before he was elected as prime minister and asked for people in the diaspora to invest in the country. I know a lot of people who would love to do so but not under the present conditions.

The Government must do its part first.

What about the surfers?

It's good that we are still celebrating the accomplishments of our athletes in Beijing, but our surfers need to participate in the World Surfing Games in Portugal in October. At the moment, Jamaica is only able to send a 'partial' team.

I am appealing to any corporate body that can sponsor our surfers to do so, as our athletes always make us proud.

Let's continue to show the world that we "lickle but wi tallawah".
