The Editor, Sir:This is truly a puzzling development in the airline saga that has gripped our fair island over the past few years. It is no secret that Air Jamaica has struggled mightily to stay afloat and at times has been to the brink, only to be resuscitated to fly another day.
While all that was going on, many new airlines have come in and carved out a niche for themselves using varying methods, but mostly lower prices, as a way to get passengers. Among them, American and United have built a loyal following.
Air Jamaica still clings to the idea that a flight to and from 'yard' should be an experience not soon forgotten. The airline has largely succeeded in that respect, even though the effort to be on time has lately been a losing battle.
concerted effort
Since the new government has taken over, there has been a concerted effort to finally rid the country of the financial burden that the national airline brings. There has even been a proposal to sell the whole operation to Air China.
The Government says there can be no more subsidies. But wait! What are they doing cutting a deal with American Airlines to guarantee flights, while that same money could be used to help make our national pride a viable enterprise?
I am, etc.,
