WESTERN BUREAU:

MANY-TIME champions Cornwall College, who started their campaign with 1-1 draw last Saturday, were on fire yesterday, spanking newcomers Green Pond High 5-0 in their Zone A ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup fixture at Cornwall.

The Dr Dean Weatherley-coached Cornwall College got their goals through Kenrick McLeod (two), Jhaun Bryan and substitutes Ravnon Foster and Jahmal Whittaker.

"I saw a lot of the things that I liked today," said Weatherley, whose team drew 1-1 with St James High in their first game. "Once we continue to work hard, we will continue to get positive results," he said.

In Zone F, Manchester High registered the most impressive margin of victory for the day, scoring a whopping 7-0 win against Cross Keys.

After soaking up some good early pressure from the Green Pond team, Cornwall took the lead when McLeod dazzled his way through the defence and fired powerfully past goalkeeper Santino Plummer.

A volley

With the momentum well in their favour, Cornwall struck for a second time in the 31st minute. The lanky Bryan capitalised on a defensive error and with the defence in disarray, fired a volley into the roof of the net.

Early in the second half, Green Pond squandered a glorious chance to pull themselves back into the game when they were awarded a penalty in the 52nd minute. However, skipper Neville Williams booted high over the crossbar.

Firing home

Cornwall made it 3-0 in the 75th minute when the wily McLeod danced into the penalty area and fired home. Five minutes later, Foster capitalised on a goalkeeping blunder and booted in to make it 4-0 while Whittaker took advantage of another goalkeeping error and sealed the issue in the 87th minute.

The competition will continue this afternoon with another 15 games. Among the teams slated to see action are former champions Munro College, who will make their season debut against Black River on their home turf. Former champions Rusea's will also be in action against Merlene Ottey in Zone B.
