Why the contest for leadership?
published: Monday | September 22, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Jamaica is a democratic country and within a democracy, I understand the notion of free speech and right to vote. However, I am at a loss as to why there is even a leadership contest for the People's National Party (PNP). Do these people have no shame. After being in an administration, for 18 years, that has wrecked Jamaica economically, socially and politically, they are trying to get back into power?

I put the blame squarely at the feet of the electorate. I understand that a large majority of the PNP delegates who support Sister P are unemployed. What does that say about these delegates? You don't have a job, but you are fighting to give someone a job who has never done anything for you?

I live in London and with the track record of both PNP contenders, they would not be able to be in representational politics with their performance in government.

I just feel sad about all this. Some people should not be allowed to vote until they understand that the consequences of putting an X beside the 'head' or the 'bell' is serious matter.

May God help us.

I am, etc.,
