LETTER OF THE DAY - Bible more accurate than scientists of old
published: Saturday | September 27, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

It was with some level of discomfort and disappointment that I read the article captioned 'Questions about God and human existence' as published in the Wednesday Gleaner (September 24).

Part of the problem with atheists and agnostics is that they perceive the fallacies being taught by professed Christianity and then become dismissive of the Bible. Indeed, truth be told, the Bible when scrutinised has proven to be more accurate than scientists of old and continues to baffle and astound archaeologists worldwide.

Our solar system is one of millions in a universe that has no bounds. It is a mathematical impossibility that blind chance allowed Planet Earth to be located at a precise distance from a medium star (our sun), is tilted at just the right angle to facilitate the seasons, has a moon at a precise location to affect our oceans and offer light by night (by reflecting the sun's rays) so as to support life as we know it with its great diversity and complexity.

Similarly, the gravitational forces that orchestrate specific orbits of the planets with their moons. These gravitational forces are so precise that a brilliant scientist Sir Isaac Newton was able to derive a concise mathematical formula. No wonder Newton believed in creation, he appreciated an Intelligent Designer behind what he observed.

Astronomy

Partly as a result of turning powerful telescopes towards the heavens, scientists have concluded that the universe had a sudden beginning or start. To create this matter intense energy is required as noted by a well-known astrophysicist: "Most and possibly, all elementary particles may be created by materialisation of energy.'' As quoted from The Universe 1976, Vol.11, page 17. The Bible at Isaiah 40: 26 tells us where this energy comes from: Raise your eyes high up and see. Who has created these things? It is the One who is bringing forth the army of them even by number, all of whom he calls by name. Due to the abundance of dynamic energy, he also being vigorous in power, not one (of them) is missing.

Reproduction

The Bible at Genesis 1:11, 12 makes mention of grass and trees being made to produce each "according to its kind" and verses 21, 24, 25 mention is made of God creating sea creatures, flying creatures and land animals "according to its kind". Clearly, then, there is no allowance for one basic kind to evolve or change into another. There are no archaeological findings of an intermediate species. Also, interbreeding of species, for example, lion and tiger, horse and donkey, result in infertile offspring.

Genesis 1:26 says that man was created in God's image, so then unlike the beasts, we have godlike qualities, an appreciation for beauty, justice and love. A point to note also is that as Genesis 2:7 shows, man was created from dust, he did not evolve from another species.

If only more of us would search within the pages of this very ancient book (Bible), we will not only realise that there is an Intelligent Designer of all things who created matter from energy, but who has sent the beginning of his creation in the form of flesh to show us how we should treat our fellowman and to lay down His perfect life so as to reconcile all things again to be in harmony with their Creator. This can only be understood and appreciated by a serious and careful study of its contents.

I am, etc.,
