Time to work after the election
published: Monday | September 29, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Congratulations to Portia Simpson Miller on her resounding victory. The delegates have spoken and have reaffirmed their faith, trust and support for her to lead this great and noble party. The leader was magnanimous in her acceptance speech on September 20, by extending an olive branch. She said she was willing to work with anyone and everyone to forge and build party unity. It is now incumbent on Dr Peter Phillips and the team that he leads to be gracious in defeat and accept the expressed will of the delegates.

There are bright young minds on both sides; once they've accepted the wishes of the delegates, everyone should be accommodated. In my Father's house there are many mansions. There are some who would wish to see the party bogged down with internal conflicts. The delegates were clear; they are impatient with this kind of behaviour. What is needed now is a strong, united front to provide the country with answers and leadership to address the plight of the oppressed and poor in this country.

No assistance

Since September 2007, representation in the constituency of South East St Mary has been at its lowest ebb in recent memory. It is now over a year since the bridge between Mahoe Hill and Broadgate collapsed. Ten families lost their homes with the passing of tropical storm Gustav in Broadgate. To date, there has been no assistance. There are sections of the Enfield main road that are fast becoming a dirt track with a plethora of craters. Where is the MP?

The Platfield to border main road is impassable. This has created undue hardship for the citizens in that community, where is the MP? In the last couple of weeks, the usually quiet farming community of Enfield has been transformed into a war zone with five unsolved murders. This has caused fear, anxiety and a steady migration of some citizens who fear for the lives of their families, Where is the MP?

It is time to put the presidential elections behind us and provide the kind of leadership that the country deserves and expects.

I am, etc.,

PATRICK WHITE
