Walters
Janielle Walters is on a mission. Not willing to settle with last year's runner-up spot, she is back this year to prove that she can be the best.
On her way to achieving that goal, 12-year-old Janielle took the top spot in the Clarendon round of The Gleaner's Children's Own Spelling Bee parish finals held at the St Gabriel's Anglican Church in May Pen.
"I feel very confident about going back and I have a good feeling that I'll win," the self-assured speller disclosed. It is a sentiment shared by her coach, the Reverend Glen Archer, who is no stranger to the competition, having coached top spellers like Jodi-Anne Maxwell.
Right attitude
He believes that Janielle's attitude can propel her not only to the top national spot, but also to the Scripps National competition in the United States.
"I think that her chances are very good for the nationals, and also possibly to go to Washington," he said.
The Glenmuir High student beat 44 other hopefuls to take the title. Romario Williams, of Ritchies Primary, was champion boy.
