Falconer is a great example
published: Saturday | October 4, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I was disappointed in a recent editorial in my favourite newspaper.

Your references to the contribution of young Senator Sandra Falconer were not accurate and, to some extent, mean.

I am retired, so I go to Parliament from time to time and, thankfully, it is now carried on television so I get to watch it at home.

Senator Falconer does not make contributions or interventions every week but when she does, I believe that they are meaningful and best of all easy to understand.

Above the fray

Her contribution to the debate earlier this year stands out as one of the better ones I have seen in the Senate in a long time. I see Falconer, Wehby, Golding, Newby and Waite as part of the future.

They speak well, stay above the fray and in my view have excellent potential to take a country which is so politically tribal forward.

In fact, The Gleaner published last year, a letter commending her for what I felt was the most meaningful and brave contribution to the Trafigura debate.

In addition, she is easy to understand, watch and listen to as her speech, pronunciation and diction are excellent.

She is a great example for Jamaicans, especially the young to emulate especially as so many of us are so crass.

She certainly stands out head and shoulders above many of her colleagues who can barely read their prepared speeches and whose grammar leaves much to be desired.

I am, etc.,

OLIVER JAMES STEWART
