STRIKERS DEVRON Clarke and Jermaine Anderson led the charge for Waterhouse as they humbled new boys Meadhaven 3-1 in the lone Digicel Premier League game at the Waterhouse Stadium yesterday.
Anderson shocked the visitors with a goal in the first minute and Clarke had a 33rd and 35th-minute brace as the home team put themselves in a comfort zone in the first half.
Clarke caught the Meadhaven backline napping when he tapped home his first goal from about six yards out and then converted a low, powerfully struck Irvino English cross into the back of the net for his second.
It took a well-taken free kick from Keammar Daley to get Meadhaven on the scoresheet in the 37th minute. Daley's effort from 20 yards away had Waterhouse goalkeeper Richard McCallum, who dove full stretch to his left, well beaten as it struck high into the roof of the net.
Off the bar
The forward very nearly pulled another goal back for the promoted team in first-half stoppage time, but this time, from the edge of the 18-yard area, the attempt came back off the bar.
With the game firmly in their grasp, the Drewsland players threatened to extend their lead. Midfielder Irvino English, who was sent off the pitch in 77th minute with a second yellow card, saw his 65th-minute free kick strike the crossbar and Anderson should certainly have netted his second when his tame shot could only pick out Meadhaven goalkeeper Andrew Gibson.
Meadhaven's best opportunity of the second half fell to Daley who darted into the area in stoppage time but delayed his shot, allowing a Waterhouse defender to close him down.
"Our defending let us down today, we really played poorly for a good spell of the first half," said Meadhaven coach Alrick Clarke.
"That being said, we got several opportunities to score and when those come against a team with as much experience as Waterhouse, you have to make them count," Clarke said.
Waterhouse coach Wayne Fairclough, who saw his team register its third win of the season, was pleased with the performance.
"I am really happy with the effort that the team put out, they came up big today - especially the forwards," Fairclough said.
"I had some concerns with the defence today but Meadhaven played well and all credit to them being such a youthful bunch," he said.
In another rescheduled game, Boys' Town travel to STETHS today to tackle Reno at 4:00 p.m.
