Eastern parishes feel left out
published: Saturday | October 11, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Residing in the eastern end of the island is never much cause for celebration - especially Olympic celebrations. The people of the eastern parishes of the island are highly saddened by the way they were completely disregarded in being a part of the Olympians home coming celebration.

They truly believed that they gave their support in full effect to the Olympic team and only could anticipate for their home arrival. To their surprise, these parishes were not mentioned to be involved in such activity, and not only did we feel left out but have also come to the realisation that we have fallen from the map.

What about the others

It is pertinent for all athletes to visit their alma mater schools and communities/ parishes, but what about the others who painted their car bonnets with flags and faces, honked their horns, and hoisted the Jamaican flag fervently during the excitement of the races, with inexhaus-tible pride for the entire Olympics until present day?

It is quite evident to all citizens that these parishes are often forgotten not only during celebrations but in all other aspects as well. We have been robbed of a golden opportunity to experience a Kodak moment. "Are we not a part of this country?"

In closing, we would still like to say, "thank you to the Olympic team who made our country proud and capitalised the true meaning of being a Jamaican." Sadly, "united we stand, divided we fall"

I am, etc.,

KHAVEL SMITH
