THE MEN'S national Under-20 football squad resumed training on Monday and coach Donovan Duckie said his focus will be on perfecting the team's tactical performance. With just over a month before they play in the Caribbean Football Union's second qualifying stage for the CONCACAF Under-20 cham-pionships, Duckie said the players' fitness levels have greatly improved, which leaves him to focus on the finer details.
"What is important now is that all of them are playing competitively," Duckie said. "Sixty per cent of them are playing in the premier league and others in Manning Cup and Under-21s so they are fit and match-ready.
"Now we have to work on the technical and tactical aspects - work on the cohesiveness and coordination," he said.
24-member squad
The squad will be in camp Mondays to Thursdays, every week, leading up to their departure in mid-November. Duckie said he currently has a squad of 24, from which 20 will be selected "as close as possible to the competition".
New to the squad is midfielder Taylor Lord, a Canadian with Jamaican parents. Duckie said he is hoping Lord will strengthen his midfield as they progress through the tournament with the ultimate goal being the 2009 World Cup.
Jamaica easily won their first-round group in the Cayman Islands in July. They beat Puerto Rico 1-0, thrashed Bermuda 4-0 and whipped the host country 3-0.
Jamaica will play their second round in Aruba against the hosts and Antigua and Barbuda in Group H, between November 18-23.
