Why no comparative gas price reduction?
published: Friday | October 17, 2008

THE EDITOR, Sir:

As at Thursday, October 9, 2008, the cost of crude oil on the world market has fallen a welcome 40 per cent precisely. Why are we then not seeing an equal reduction at the gas station pumps?

I think I speak for everyone when I say that a 10 per cent drop is unjustifiable. Is it that the common consumer is not entitled to a fair cut? How can Petrojam continue to keep gas and gas oil prices high, when the entire Jamaica continues to witness prices falling?

Adjustments are made to their prices within days of notification of increases on the world market to them. Should the reductions not be passed on to the retailers and the public with the same urgency and commitment the increases are?

We are all feeling the effects of the worldwide inflation but to keep oil prices inexplicably high with unjustifiable excuses is not only unfair, but an insult to us consumers.

An intervention from our governing bodies is long overdue.

I am, etc.,
