DEFENDING CHAMPION Johnny Bloomfield shot one-under 71 yesterday to hold a one-stroke lead at the end of the opening day of the three-day Jamaica Open Golf Championship, at the Half Moon golf course in Montego Bay.

Bloomfield was followed by Puerto Rico's Miguel Suarez and veteran Jamaican Delroy Cambridge who carded 72s.

Carl Pederson (US) and Bryce Arsenault (Canada) were tied for third at one over 73.

A good chance

"I have a good chance of defending my championship and I am looking forward to doing so. It would feel good to take the championship twice in a row," said Bloomfield yesterday.

Bloomfield, Suarez and Cambridge are set to tee-off today at 11:00 a.m.

Meanwhile, Jamaica Hoerman Cup representative Xavier Rose shot a five-over 77 to hold a one-stroke lead over compatriots Tommy Lee and Fred Sutherland in the amateur section of the event.
