All-Stars go head-to-head on Barclays prediction panel
published: Friday | October 31, 2008

The Barclays Premier League (BPL) prediction panel is back!

For the second year running, SportsMax and The Gleaner have created an All-Star team going head-to-head each week!

The panel for this season needs no introduction. It includes Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore, Yendi Phillipps, Courtney Walsh and Asafa Powell.

There will be three rounds, so follow closely! Round one October 30, 2008-January 9, 2009; round two, January 16, 2009-March 13, 2009, and round three, March 20, 2009-May 15, 2009.

Each expert has chosen a high school, and the winner of each round gets to make a presentation of prizes from Western Sports to the high school football team of his/her choice.

Now let's introduce the 'BPL Prediction Panel'. Meet 'The Coach', 'The Beauty Queen', 'The Cricketer' and 'The Track Star'.

This week, let's meet two of our All-Stars! The final two will be profiled on Monday's page.

Yendi Phillipps

Phillipps

Name: Yendi Phillipps

Panel nickname: The 'Beauty Queen'

Currently: Television host and model

Famous for: Becoming the first Miss World contestant, as Miss Jamaica World 2007, to make it to the finals of all sectional events at the competition.

Favourite BPL team: Manchester United

Fun fact: Yendi is admittedly the biggest WI cricket fan there is ... always ready to rally!

Strength: "I'm an avid sports fan and was raised in a family where sports has always been the topic of discussion. Deep down inside I'm a star athlete!

School of choice: Jamaica College

Message to competitors: "It's woman time now! Get ready to be humbled" (smile)

Biography: Yendi Phillipps was the winner of the Miss Jamaica World 2007 beauty pageant. She represented Jamaica at the Miss World 2007 in Sanya, China.

She holds a bachelor's degree in fine arts, with a concentration in dance, from the State University of New York at Brockport, and is currently pursuing a master's degree in recreation and leisure management.

Yendi was the host of the recent Digicel's Rising Stars competition. She represents all the ladies on this one and has to prove that women know their sports too!

Asafa Powell

Powell

Name: Asafa Powell

Panel nickname: The 'Track Star'

Currently: Olympic gold medallist (4x100m) and former world record holder (100m)

Famous for: Being the second-fastest man ever in the world.

Favourite Premiership team: Manchester United.

Fun fact: Asafa admits he's very playful and jokes about everything on the earth.

Strength: Be warned, Asafa predicts that he'll pick the winners correctly. He's always been very good at making predictions.

School of choice: Charlemont High

Message to competitors: "Yendi, this is not a male or female thing, I'm going to win and that's that."

Biography: Asafa Powell is the second-fastest man ever in the history of track and field. He previously held the 100m world record between June 2005 and May 2008, with times of 9.77 and 9.74 seconds, respectively.

Powell also ran the fastest anchor leg ever in a 4x100m relays in Beijing, in winning gold and setting a new world record in the event. His personal best time is 9.72 seconds.

On the panel, Asafa has to prove he knows what's happening off the track!
